Shaping the future of independent music has always been the guiding force for producer, engineer, and multi-instrumentalist Kate Ellwanger, who writes and performs under the name Dot. She’s always pushing the boundaries of sound design, exploring what’s possible with technology, and rejecting genre-based confines that trap many of today’s artists.
2021 also saw Dot’s return to the live space playing venues and festivals like EDC Las Vegas, Red Rocks, HARD Summer, Elsewhere Space, The Fonda, Exchange LA, and Lost In Dreams, as well as opening for dance music legends Diplo, Zedd, Gryffin, Madeon, Dillon Francis, Louis The Child and David Guetta, showcasing her versatility.
One of Dot’s main goals is to help push lesser heard voices in music forward. She founded her label Unspeakable Records to accomplish this and has given many female-identifying artists some of their first looks in the scene. This also helped to earn her a spot on the voting committee for the Recording Academy as well as a contributing role with Music Cares, and most recently led her into the Web3 space, with success as one of the top-selling artists in music NFTs on platforms like Catalog and Sound.xyz.
Born in Olympia, Washington, Dot (Kate Ellwanger) had a propensity for music from an early age. Her deep rooted devotion to music led to her being classically trained as a child. Ever wanting to expand her knowledge of music, she went on to earn a B.A. in Music from Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music at Chapman University, and a Master’s Degree in Music Production, Technology, and Innovation from Berklee College of Music. When she’s not producing her own music, she excels in mixing and mastering a variety of different genres and teaches classes for those who are seeking to learn more about music production.
When not working on music, Kate excels in a variety of hobbies. She’s spent over 15 years studying mindfulness practices from multiple traditions, including yoga, meditation, and breath work. Her dedication to constantly pushing herself has seen her become a triathlete where she earned an invitation to the 2021 IronMan 70.3 World Championship. In 2023, Kate will continue her upwards trajectory with a full-length album on the way and multiple tour dates throughout the year.
